HOBBIES is an acronym for Higher Order Basis Based Integral Equation Solver. As the name implies, HOBBIES employs entire domain higher order polynomials over a large quadrilateral patch as the basis functions for the frequency domain integral equation solver. Higher order basis functions (HOBs) significantly reduce the number of unknowns compared with the traditional piece-wise basis functions, e.g., Rao-Wilton-Glisson triangular patch basis functions (RWGs). HOBBIES can be used for solution of various types of electromagnetic field analyses involving electrically large objects of arbitrary shapes composed of complex metallic and dielectric structures. Since it is an out-of-core solver it has the capability of solving extremely large electrically problems using modest computational resources.
