Ftool: A Structural Analysis Educational Interactive Tool. This document describes an interactive graphics system, called FTOOL (Frame Analysis Tool), which has been used successfully in the past five years in PUC-Rio as an academic tool for teaching structural analysis and design. The system is based on a very efficient direct manipulation interactive graphics user interface in which the student has full control over the model being analyzed. The program integrates all phases of the structural analysis process: model manipulation and attribute assignment (pre-processing), numerical analysis, and result visualization (post-processing). An efficient, topology-based data representation scheme allows for a natural integration of these phases and for powerful modeling and visualization capabilities. This integration plays a key role in the learning process. The article also relates the experience in using FTOOL in the Structural Analysis course in PUC-Rio, pointing out the improvements in the learning process.
