The Pest1 code determines the stability of a given equilibrium using the delta-W method. It uses the correct kinetic energy and can determine the complete spectrum. In practice we seek the unstable eigenvalues only. The procedure requires a mapping to the PEST co-ordinates and then computation of delta-W in the plasma region, and in the external vacuum-region to set up the potential and kinetic energy matrices. This is followed by an eigenvalue determination using an inverse vector iteration techinque.
